Wimbledon 2022 Prize money announced, singles champions to win £2 million each
Wimbledon 2022 is scheduled
to start on June 27.
Wimbledon on Thursday announced prize money for this year's Grand
Slam tournament. The winners of the singles event will take home £2 million
each.
A total of £40.35 million will be spent on prize money in
Wimbledon 2022, an increase of 11.1 percent from last year's Championship.
Notably, Wimbledon 2022 witnessed a limited crowd due to
COVID-19.
Earlier, it was reported that the removal of ranking points
by the ATP and WTA tours after Wimbledon's decision to ban Russian and
Belarusian players following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, could lead to a
reduced prize fund.
Players making exit in the first round of the singles will collect
£50,000, while the runners-up in the finals will fetch £1 million.
Chairman of Wimbledon organisers. Ian Hewitt said:
From the first round of the qualifying competition to the champions being crowned, this year's prize money distribution aims to reflect just how important the players are to The Championships as we look to continue to deliver one of the world's leading sporting events.
Wimbledon 2022 is scheduled to start on June 27. Novak
Djokovic is the current champion in men's singles, while now retired Ashleigh
Barty was the winner of the women’s singles title.
