Zverev is set to miss Wimbledon 2022 after sustaining a horrific ankle injury
in the semi-final of Roland Garros against Rafale Nadal. At the end of the 2nd
set, the German twisted his ankle.
The seriousness of the injury was visible as Zverev cried in pain and required a wheelchair to leave the court. He re-emerged on crutches to thank fans and officially retire from the match. World No.3 later confirmed that early medical checks showed he had “torn several ligaments”.
Zverev was set to be promoted to a career-high world No. 2 next week, behind Daniil Medvedev, who will return to the top spot. However, it seems now that Zverev is unlikely to recover in time for Wimbledon and will be out of action for 6-8 weeks.
The Tokyo Olympic champion took to Instagram to give updates on his injury. Zverev shared his picture with crutches and wrote, “I am now on my way back home. Based on the first medical checks, it looks like I have torn several lateral ligaments in my right foot. I will be flying to Germany on Monday to make further examinations and to determine the best and quickest way for me to recover."
