Who is Ralf Ragnick ?
Ragnick had an unsuccessful playing career however, his managerial career did turn out great. He started at his hometown club Viktoria Backnang. He continued coaching in the lower divisions of German football for a number of years before he was given the chance to manage former side Stuttgart in the Bundesliga, but was sacked after a difficult second season at the club.
He then managed Hannover and did a great job by earning promotion to the Bundesliga. He then later on applied to become the assistant coach for the German national team however he missed out on the role.
Rangnick then went on to enjoy success at Hoffenheim and Schalke. In the second year at Schalke, he won the German Cup, German Super Cup, and he also reached the semi finals of the Champions League, going on to lose to Manchester United.
He then took a break from football management and became the sporting director for both Red Bull Salzburg and Red Bull Leipzig.
He is well known in Germany for bringing RB Leipzig from the lower leagues of German football, into the UEFA Champions League. He brought the likes of Timo Werner, Emil Forsberg, Naby Keita to this growing club.
Truly spectacular!
What can Ragnick bring to Manchester United ?
Ralf Ragnick is known as a ‘professor of football’. He is known for being a huge part of the success of other coaches such as Jürgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel, Ralph Hasenhüttl and Julian Nagelsmann.
He is known for his ‘Gegenpress’ style of football, where a team instantly fights to win the ball back after losing possession. He’s also gets his teams to play on the front foot, he loves a high pressing team.
He has said this about his tactics and approach - “ If you want to increase the speed of your game, you have to develop quicker minds rather than quicker feet,” he said. “At RB Leipzig, we work on increasing the memory space and the processing pace. We put players into the Soccerbot, for example – a machine that simulates previous games and allows players to relive key moments of matches. It’s PlayStation football, but with your feet. The players enjoy it so much we have a hard time getting some of them to stop. Tactics, fitness and rules are all hugely important, but they’re only a means to an end. My job – the job – is to improve players. Players follow you as a manager if they feel that you make them better. That’s the greatest, most sincere motivation there is.”
Lets see what he can do at Manchester United…
